Milk Like Sugar

performance exposes artifice force-fed to low-income girls

challenge

Design media for a play about a young woman, Annie, who is coming of age in a broken community. Convey the way in which Annie's environment is saturated with “sugar” by its media, food, and characters.

solution

Images of Annie's body are filled with hip hop icons that yield to flames, a symbol used in the text, as she changes course. Surfaces include an array of monitors and projection on the set.
